Photographing the Humpback Calf in Tonga
By Patricia Mezzina, Wildlife & Underwater Photographer

The Call to Adventure
It began with a dream—a vision of sapphire waters and a whale’s eye, ancient and knowing, gazing back through the blue. The call was unmistakable. Tonga, one of the only places on Earth where humans can swim alongside humpback whales in the wild, had long whispered to my soul. I had to go. I had to witness it for myself, camera in hand, heart wide open.
Days later, I found myself aboard a small boat bobbing in the remote waters of the South Pacific, hours from the nearest village, far from everything familiar. The crew cut the engine. Silence fell, broken only by the lapping waves and the distant exhale of a whale’s breath. This was sacred space—the realm of giants.
The ocean is no passive backdrop. Visibility shifts. Currents tug. The whales may appear… or not. Patience became my greatest ally. My guide, a seasoned Tongan freediver, motioned quietly—movement below. We slipped into the sea, finned toward shadows. Time slowed. A mother and calf hovered in the blue, the mother resting deep below, vast and still as a cathedral.
Then it happened. The calf rose from the depths, buoyant and curious. It locked eyes with me for a breathless moment—pure, wild consciousness. My finger hovered over the shutter. The young whale circled us in a slow spiral, surfacing, breathing, diving again. Playful, unafraid. It came so close I could see the fine hairs on its chin, the white mottled patches on its belly glowing in shafts of sunlight.
I had one shot—no room for hesitation. My heart pounded. Light, angle, timing—it had to be perfect. As the calf passed above me, silhouetted against the glittering surface, I clicked. A single frame. Then another. My housing beeped—memory full. A wave of panic. Had I captured it?
Back on the boat, hands shaking, I reviewed the images. And there it was—one photo that stilled the world. The whale’s eye in frame. Bubbles spiraling upward. Joy. Wildness. A moment of true connection between species, frozen in time. I had not just taken a photograph. I had touched the mystery.
I left Tonga changed. The ocean had spoken through that calf—innocent yet immense, playful yet wise. Now, I share the story through my lens, not just for beauty’s sake, but as a call to protect what’s left of our wild, breathing planet.

The photograph has become a talisman in my life. It reminds me that when you venture into the unknown with courage and reverence, the wild might just come to meet you.
