The Hero’s Journey: Eye to Eye with Rarity
By Patricia Mezzina, Underwater & Travel Photographer
It started with a whisper—a diver’s rumor passed between tanks and tide: “There’s been a hawksbill sighting off Ulua Beach.” My pulse quickened. The Hawaiian hawksbill turtle, ‘ea, is so rare it borders myth—only a few dozen nest across the islands. I knew I had to try. I descended into the blue just after sunrise. The world hushed beneath the waves. Reef fish danced through coral gardens. Light filtered through the surface like liquid gold. Every breath echoed in my ears. I was in another realm now—one where patience and presence were the only currencies that mattered. Time passed. The reef offered color but not the turtle. I drifted, scanning the terrain, mindful not to chase or disturb. A shadow moved in my periphery—but it was a ray. Then a green sea turtle. Beautiful, but not the one I sought. The air in my tank grew light. I prepared to ascend, heart heavy.
And then—just as I was about to surface—I saw her. So beautiful, with a jagged shell and hawk-like beak. A hawksbill. Gliding gracefully, ancient and quiet. My heart surged. I adjusted my buoyancy, floated still, and waited. She turned. She looked at me. I raised the camera slowly, so as not to disturb her. The moment was fragile. She hovered near a coral ledge, silhouetted by the soft blue light. I clicked the shutter as she turned, capturing the delicate patterns on her shell, the golden flecks in her eye. Then she vanished into the reef like a breath held too long.
One photograph. One frame that proved she was real—and here. The image became more than a record—it was a quiet witness. Proof that the rare still exists. That wildness survives, and is worth every effort to protect.
I surfaced with salt on my lips and reverence in my chest. That dive, that turtle, I was so grateful. I didn’t just capture a rare species—I was granted a moment of trust from something ancient and endangered. And through the lens, I carry her story forward.
