Guardian of Mala Pier | Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle | Maui Ocean Wall Art
By Patricia Mezzina, Wildlife and Travel Photographer

Mala Pier on the west side of Maui, where the ocean reclaims what was once manmade—concrete and steel now draped in coral, teeming with life. As I descended beneath the surface, the wrecked pilings stretched like ancient bones across the sea floor, sheltering schools of fish, eels, and something even more sacred.

A resident Hawaiian green sea turtle, old and unbothered, glided past the fallen structure. I hovered, weightless, letting the current pull me gently alongside her. Her shell bore stories—etched in scars, algae, and time.

She moved slowly, yet purposefully—circling the ruins like a watchful guardian. Light streamed through the broken slats above, casting golden rays across her path. I framed the shot as she paused, almost posing, between two coral-covered beams. One shutter click—and the moment was mine.

Mala gave me more than a photograph that day. It offered a glimpse into a wild balance: decay and renewal, wreckage and refuge, human past and marine presence. And in the center of it all, the honu—still watching, still gliding.
