Steps of Sanctuary: Cambodia’s Rescued Giants- Elephants of Kulen Forest

Steps of Sanctuary: Cambodia’s Rescued Giants
By Patricia Mezzina, Wildlife & Travel Photographer

In the cool morning mist of Siem Reap province, I walked the red-earth trail into one of Cambodia’s protected elephant sanctuaries. The air smelled of damp leaves and quiet beginnings. This was no zoo—this was healing ground.

Out from the forest came the elephants—rescued from logging, tourism, and hardship. One by one, they appeared: massive, gentle, slow, and dignified. A mahout whispered softly, not commands but friendship. These elephants weren’t performing—they were simply being, free at last to roam their ancestral forest.

I lifted my camera as an elder female, dusted in sienna mud, walked toward the stream. Her eyes held something ancient, trunk swinging in rhythm with the wind, she conveys dignity and strength.

Click. A frame of hope.

This wasn’t just a photo of wildlife—it was a story of restoration, of dignity returned to beings who had borne the weight of human progress. In that moment, I felt not like an observer, but like a witness.
