By day, the Statue of Liberty belonged to everyone—bright, crowded, endlessly familiar. That was my ordinary world.
The call came with the moonrise, seen from far back on the Jersey City side of the Hudson. I knew distance would be my ally. Step away, compress the scene, let the moon grow heavy and intentional behind her. This wasn’t about getting closer—it was about seeing more.
Doubt arrived with the wind. The river hissed against the seawall. Traffic murmured behind me. A train rattled past, then faded. From this far, Liberty looked small, almost fragile. Clouds threatened. Moonlight never keeps promises.
I stayed.
The city softened. Water turned dark and glassy. The statue held her ground across the harbor, framed by space and silence. When the moon climbed higher, it swelled—pulled forward by distance, pressing close to her crown. Silver light spilled across the water, stretching toward my feet.
The moment hovered, brief and exact.
The reward was more than the image—it was the alignment. Liberty steady. Moon immense. Time paused just long enough.
