Rumors of a secret beach, hidden behind the jagged cliffs of Hana, with sand the color of molten lava and waters more intense than any blue I'd ever seen. Red Sand Beach—Kaihalulu. I’d heard the name passed in hushed tones from other photographers on the Road to Hana, always accompanied by a warning: “It’s beautiful… but dangerous.”

As a photographer, I live for moments like these. And so, with my gear strapped to my back and resolve hardening in my chest, I made my way to the trailhead behind Hana High School. There was no sign. No official marker. Just a worn footpath threading through ironwood trees and hugging a cliff that looked as if one wrong step could lead to an obituary rather than a photo.

The hike was more scramble than stroll. The path was narrow—maybe a foot wide in parts—cut into a crumbling cliffside, the Pacific crashing below me in hypnotic, unforgiving swells. My hands clutched tree roots and jagged volcanic rock for balance, trying not to glance down too long. Each step felt like a calculated risk. The red dirt was loose and slippery from a morning rain, adding to the treachery.

Halfway in, a gust of wind nearly knocked me sideways. I paused. Breathed. And reminded myself: This is
what separates a snapshot from a soulshot.

Then, I saw it.

The cove opened up in a surreal amphitheater of scarlet. A crescent-shaped bay of rust-red sand wrapped in jagged lava rock cliffs, the beach cloaked in seclusion. The waves here didn’t just roll—they pulsed, echoing off the cliffs like ancient chants. The iron-rich soil gleamed against the turquoise waters like something out of another planet.

I set up my tripod low and wide, catching the play of contrast between red sand and teal sea under the golden light of late afternoon. Each wave left trails of white foam like calligraphy on the crimson canvas. The wind howled, but I barely noticed—I was in flow.

The photos I captured that day aren’t just images. They’re evidence of risk, grit, and reverence. That beach doesn’t give up its secrets easily. You have to earn it.
