Silver Banks Encounter: Whale Tail
By Patricia Mezzina
Travel & Wildlife Photographer
I came to the Silver Banks knowing the odds. This wasn’t a zoo, not a guarantee—just open ocean and wild whales. My intention was simple but daring: to meet one on her terms and, if luck allowed, capture her tail as she disappeared into blue.
The call came with the first entry into the water. The sea was endless, cobalt and alive. My breath sounded too loud inside my mask. Sunlight fractured above me, and below—nothing but depth. Doubt followed quickly. Hours passed. Swells lifted and dropped us. Salt burned my lips. My legs ached. The ocean doesn’t reward impatience.
Then she appeared.
A shape formed in the blue—massive, effortless. A humpback female, moving slowly, deliberately. My heartbeat thundered, then softened. We drifted toward each other, suspended. The water was quiet except for the faint clicks and distant songs vibrating through my chest more than my ears.
We came eye to eye.
Her eye was ancient and curious, calm in a way that felt disarming. In that moment, I wasn’t a photographer or a visitor—I was simply another creature in her world. Time stretched thin. I steadied myself, fighting the urge to rush.
Then she turned.
With a gentle sweep, her tail rose—broad, scarred, perfect—catching the light like polished silver. She kicked once, twice, and began to fade into the deep. I framed instinctively, breath held, and released the shutter as she swam away into infinity.
The reward wasn’t just the image. It was the exchange. A meeting, witnessed and complete. I surfaced changed, carrying proof that the ocean gives its greatest gifts only to those willing to wait, to respect, and to let go.
