I found the truck by accident, sitting at the edge of a sunflower field in the thick heat of a New Jersey summer. Its paint was sun-faded and chipped, the metal warm to the touch, as if it had been parked there for decades instead of hours. The field stretched behind it, rows of sunflowers turned toward the sky, their yellow faces catching the afternoon light.
Cicadas buzzed relentlessly, filling the air with a steady electric hum. The smell of dry grass and warm earth mixed with diesel and rust. A light breeze moved through the field, brushing against my legs and setting the flowers swaying, their stems creaking softly.
The truck felt out of place and perfectly at home at the same time—an old workhorse resting after a long life of use. I waited as clouds drifted past the sun, watching shadows roll across the hood and the field beyond. When the light settled just right, I framed the shot and pressed the shutter.
It wasn’t just a photograph of a truck in a field. It was a moment of summer—heat, color, and stillness—caught before the season moved on.
