September tightens the air in the gorge at Watkins Glen until every breath feels rinsed clean. The waterfall keeps its own weather. It gathers itself in a narrow throat of shale, then loosens—threading into veils, then into a single bright plunge. The sound is a constant, layered hush: silk over stone, bass notes in the pool below, the soft percussion of spray on leaves.
Light arrives in fragments. It slips through hemlock needles and breaks on the water, turning the fall into moving glass. Mist beads on my lens. The rock sweats a dark green, moss breathing where the sun can’t reach. Each second the water redraws the same line and never repeats it.
I wait for the crowd to thin, for the moment when the gorge feels like a held breath. Then the shutter answers the fall’s steady voice. The photograph catches a shape, a sheen, a suggestion of motion—but the gorge keeps the rest: the cold on my knuckles, the mineral taste of the air, the quiet power of water teaching stone how to listen.
