The wind gets there first. It always does. It runs along the ridge above the harbor and finds the white cylinders waiting, their wooden arms stretched like they’ve been holding the sky in place for centuries. The windmills of Mykonos stand in a row, simple and sure, looking out over a sea that never really rests.
They were built when grain mattered more than views—when ships brought wheat instead of cameras, and the hill was a working place, not a postcard. The mills turned the island’s wind into bread, and the wind into labor. Sailors once used them as landmarks. Farmers trusted them with harvests. Their work was loud, dusty, ordinary, and necessary.
Now the sails are mostly still, but the wind keeps telling the old story. Tourists climb the path. Phones lift.
