I’m standing on the deck of a small riverboat as it cuts slowly through the Vltava, engine humming low beneath my feet. The water folds away from the bow in soft, deliberate waves, turning the city’s lights into trembling lines of gold. Cold air moves off the surface and up into the dark.
Prague rises on both banks like a layered memory. Gothic spires pierce the night—remnants of a medieval capital that once anchored the Holy Roman Empire. Baroque domes swell beside them, built after fires and wars reshaped the skyline. Centuries of emperors, occupations, revolutions, and velvet uprisings stand shoulder to shoulder in illuminated stone. The city has burned, been invaded, rebuilt, and still it glows.
Shooting from the boat is the first trial. The deck shifts under every step. The current nudges us sideways. I brace against the rail, adjusting to the rhythm of the water. Long exposures demand stillness, and the river refuses to give it easily. Reflections stretch and fracture with every wake that passes.
We drift beneath the shadow of Charles Bridge, its statues black against the sky, saints watching over tourists and trams alike. Above the embankment, Old Town gathers in warm light—windows lit like quiet witnesses. I wait for the boat to slow, for the captain to ease the throttle, for the water to smooth just enough to mirror the city whole.
Then the motion and the light align. The river steadies. The spires sharpen. Prague—medieval heart, baroque skin, modern pulse—settles into the frame. The shutter opens and closes, and for a second the centuries hold still together.
