Monarch Butterfly— A Fragile Traveler
By Patricia Mezzina

It landed without ceremony.
One moment the meadow was empty, wind moving through milkweed and late-summer grass. The next, a monarch settled into the frame — orange wings lit like stained glass against the green.
There is something different about photographing a monarch butterfly. You’re not just documenting beauty. You’re witnessing a traveler.
This small, weightless creature carries one of the most extraordinary migration stories in the natural world — thousands of miles across generations, guided by instinct and sun. No single butterfly completes the full journey. Each one flies a chapter of a larger story.
Through the lens, I could see the wear along the edges of its wings — tiny tears from wind and distance. Proof that survival leaves marks. It opened and closed slowly, warming in the light, unaware of the headlines that now surround its species: habitat loss, shrinking numbers, disappearing milkweed.
The meadow was quiet. The monarch was still.
In moments like this, photography feels less like art and more like witness work. A reminder that the fragile things are often the strongest travelers of all — and that their future is tied quietly to ours.
For a few seconds, it held its place in the sun.
Then it lifted — and the sky felt bigger because of it.
