Pompeii, Italy: Under the Shadow of Vesuvius
By Patricia Mezzina, Wildlife & Travel Photographer
The stone arch still stands, its inscription worn but unbroken against a sky impossibly blue. Two columns frame the past like a doorway history refuses to close. Beyond them, through brick and carved marble, rises Mount Vesuvius — quiet now, almost gentle in the distance.
It is hard to reconcile the calm of this scene with the violence that once came from that mountain.
In 79 A.D., Vesuvius erupted with catastrophic force, burying Pompeii beneath ash and pumice. What was once a thriving Roman city — filled with merchants, magistrates, families, and daily ritual — was frozen in a single catastrophic moment. And yet today, sunlight spills across the ruins as if nothing ever happened.
The inscription overhead, etched in stone nearly two thousand years ago, speaks of civic order and Roman authority. The red brick and white columns reflect both resilience and fragility. This was a place of structure, of governance, of life moving forward with confidence. And always, looming in the background, the mountain.
Standing here, you feel the uneasy relationship between beauty and destruction. The geometry of the architecture draws the eye upward, while Vesuvius anchors the horizon — a reminder that nature writes the final chapter.
Now, tourists pass through where citizens once hurried. The wind moves through open walls that were once enclosed homes and public buildings. Time has stripped the city down to its bones, but it has not erased it.
Pompeii does not feel abandoned. It feels paused.
And in the distance, Mount Vesuvius waits — silent, watchful — as it has for centuries since the day it changed everything.
