The engine hums low beneath my feet as the boat eases forward, cutting a narrow path through the morning glass. Behind us, Lahaina Harbor begins to shrink — masts folding into the skyline, docks tightening into lines, Front Street softening into color.
This photograph was taken in that in-between moment — not fully at sea, not fully ashore. The shoreline still close enough to hear laughter drifting across the water. The harbor still busy with crews preparing for the day. The West Maui Mountains standing steady in the background, as they always have.
From the water, Lahaina reveals itself differently. The town feels layered — ocean first, then boats, then rooftops, then mountains rising beyond. It’s a perspective earned only by leaving.
At the time, it was simply another departure. A routine heading out — toward reef, toward open Pacific, toward whatever the day would bring. Nothing in the frame hinted that this view would soon carry the weight of memory.
Now, this image feels like a witness. A record of Lahaina Harbor as it was — alive with motion, trade winds tugging at canvas, sunlight breaking across the bow as we moved toward open sea.
