Karnak’s Stone Forest-Through the Pillars of Time
By Patricia Mezzina, Wildlife & Travel Photographer
My intentions were clear when I began the journey: I wanted to photograph the sacred site of the columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall. I had studied the images for years, dreaming about the moment when I would finally stand beneath those towering pillars of stone inside the vast temple of Karnak Temple Complex.
But Egypt has a way of turning a simple goal into a pilgrimage.
The journey began in the desert before the heat had fully risen. The air carried that unmistakable desert scent—warm sand, sun-baked earth, and something faintly mineral that seemed to rise from the land itself. As our vehicle moved through the dusty roads of Luxor, the horizon shimmered in golden light.
The desert wind brushed across my face like the breath of something ancient. Dust lingered on my lips and tongue, carrying a taste that was dry and metallic, as if the land itself remembered the centuries.
Then Karnak appeared.
The temple walls rose from the ground like the remains of a lost city. Massive sandstone blocks glowed amber in the morning light, their surfaces carved with hieroglyphs that have survived more than three thousand years.
When I stepped into the Great Hypostyle Hall, everything changed.
The scale of the place swallowed sound and space all at once.
Columns—hundreds of them—rose around me like the trunks of an enormous stone forest. Some stretched nearly seventy feet toward the sky, their capitals blooming outward like giant papyrus flowers frozen in time.
The sounds were strange inside the hall. Footsteps echoed softly against the stone floor, bouncing between the pillars and fading into silence. Somewhere above, a bird’s cry slipped through the open spaces where the ancient roof once stood. The wind whispered through the columns like a distant voice from another age.
I moved slowly, feeling the texture of the carvings beneath my fingertips.
The stone was warm where the sun touched it, cool where shadows lingered. The hieroglyphs were not just carvings—they were stories chiseled into eternity by pharaohs like Seti I and Ramesses II, rulers who believed these temples would outlast time itself.
I tilted my head upward.
From below, the columns formed a breathtaking architecture of sky and stone. Beams of light filtered down between them, illuminating carvings that had once been painted in brilliant colors.
For a moment I stopped walking.
Standing there, it felt as though I had stepped through centuries rather than simply traveled across a desert.
I imagined the hall in its full glory—priests moving through the shadows, the scent of incense drifting through the air, chants echoing beneath the colossal pillars as rituals unfolded for the gods.
Then the moment appeared.
Looking straight up between the columns, everything aligned—the carved capitals, the massive architraves above, and a small window of blue sky framed by stone older than most civilizations.
I lifted my camera slowly.
The sandstone glowed warm and golden in the light, every crack and carving telling a story of time, wind, and devotion.
The shutter clicked.
And in that instant I understood something about places like Karnak.
They are not just ruins.
They are living memories carved into the earth.
Standing beneath those pillars, surrounded by the silent witnesses of three thousand years, I felt as though I had traveled not only across the desert—but through time itself.
