The Obelisk of Thutmose 1- Karnak at Dusk
By Patricia Mezzina, Wildlife & Travel Photographer
My intentions were clear when I began the journey: I wanted to photograph the sacred site of the obelisk of Thutmose I at the great temple of Karnak Temple Complex.
But Egypt rarely gives you just a photograph.
It gives you an experience.
The day began in the desert before the heat fully claimed the land. The air was dry and carried that unmistakable scent—sun-warmed sand, stone, and something ancient that lingers just beneath the surface. As I moved through Luxor, the horizon shimmered with gold and dust, and the Nile, though unseen, seemed to pulse quietly nearby like a lifeline stretching back through time.
There’s a taste to Egypt that stays with you.
Dust settles on your lips, fine as powder, carrying the mineral weight of centuries. The air brushes your skin like a warm current, wrapping around you, reminding you that this land has endured everything—wind, empire, time itself.
And then Karnak rises.
Not as ruins—but as something still alive.
The stones glow with a warmth that feels almost intentional, as though they are holding onto the memory of the sun. Massive columns and broken walls frame the sky, guiding you inward toward something greater.
And then I saw it.
The obelisk.
It stood impossibly tall, piercing the sky like a needle of light frozen in stone. Carved from a single piece of granite and inscribed with hieroglyphs, it was never meant to be just a monument. It was a connection between earth and the divine—a symbol of the sun god, a marker of power, and a declaration of eternity.
I walked closer.
The sounds around me softened. Footsteps echoed faintly across the stone floor. A distant voice carried through the temple and faded quickly into silence. The wind moved through the ruins in low whispers, threading its way between columns and broken walls.
I reached out and touched the stone.
It was warm from the day’s heat, textured with carvings that have endured more than three thousand years. Every mark was deliberate. Every line told a story of kingship, devotion, and permanence.
And then the sky began to change.
The light shifted from gold to fire.
Clouds rolled across the horizon, catching the sun’s final breath, turning the sky into a canvas of orange, crimson, and violet. The obelisk absorbed that light, glowing as if it were alive—its hieroglyphs suddenly more vivid, more present.
I stepped back and framed the shot.
From where I stood, the obelisk rose perfectly between the surrounding ruins, anchored by the earth yet reaching endlessly upward. The contrast was undeniable—stone and sky, permanence and movement, history and the fleeting moment of sunset.
I could almost feel the past pressing in.
I imagined priests standing here at dawn, watching the first light strike the obelisk. I imagined the rituals, the offerings, the belief that this stone was not just carved—but consecrated.
The air felt different in that moment—charged, almost electric.
The desert wind brushed against my face again, carrying the scent of dust and stone and something older still. The warmth of the day lingered in the ground beneath my feet, radiating upward.
I held my breath.
And pressed the shutter.
The click was quiet, but it felt monumental.
Because in that instant, I wasn’t just photographing an obelisk.
I was capturing a conversation between time and light.
Between a civilization that built for eternity—and a fleeting moment of sunset that would be gone in seconds.
And standing there in Karnak, beneath a sky on fire and beside a monument that has outlived empires, I understood something simple and powerful:
Some places don’t just show you history.
They let you stand inside it.
