The rhythm of Prague doesn’t rush—it unfolds.
I stood in Old Town Square, camera in hand, as the soft, steady clip-clop of hooves echoed across the cobblestones. A horse-drawn carriage passed through my frame, timeless and unhurried, as if it had wandered in from another century. And behind it, anchoring the entire moment, stood the Prague Astronomical Clock—alive not just with movement, but with over 600 years of history.
There’s something surreal about watching it. This isn’t just a clock—it’s a living piece of medieval engineering. Installed in 1410 by clockmaker Mikuláš of Kadaň and later refined by Jan Hanuš, the Orloj is one of the oldest working astronomical clocks in the world. Its intricate dials don’t simply tell time—they map the movement of the sun and moon, display zodiac signs, and reflect multiple time systems once used across Europe.
As I framed the shot, I found myself pulled into its details—the deep blues and golds of the astronomical dial, the calendar below illustrating the rhythm of the year, and the small figures that come to life every hour in the “Walk of the Apostles.” Flanking the clock are statues representing vanity, greed, and death—quiet reminders that time is always moving, whether we notice it or not.
Everything in that moment felt layered. The carriage rolling by. The worn stones beneath my feet. The clock still ticking after centuries of war, damage, and careful restoration—even surviving World War II. Prague doesn’t separate its past from its present—it lets them exist together, seamlessly.
I came to capture an image, but what I found was something deeper—a place where time doesn’t just pass… it lingers, tells stories, and invites you to slow down long enough to listen.
