Out on the edge of the Silver Banks, nearly 80 miles off the coast of the Dominican Republic, the Atlantic opens into a world I had dreamed about for years. Salt Cay - was my home base where we set out on our expedition.
This journey was never just about photography—it was about a long-anticipated, once-in-a-lifetime chance to be present with humpback whales in their own vast, blue cathedral.
As we slipped quietly into the water, everything softened. The noise of the world disappeared, replaced by light filtering down in gentle rays and the slow, graceful movement of giants. There is nothing that prepares you for that first moment—seeing them not from a boat, but beside you… alive, aware, and completely at home.
And then, it happened.
One whale turned toward me. Slowly. Intentionally.
We met eye to eye-a female traveling with her mature calf, their connection steady and unspoken, while a possible suitor lingers in the background, drawn into their orbit. It’s a glimpse into a private world, one I felt incredibly privileged to witness.
Time didn’t just slow—it vanished. I could see every detail etched into her skin, every mark telling a story of migration, survival, and life in the open ocean. There was no fear, only a quiet acknowledgment… a shared moment between two very different worlds.
In that moment, I wasn’t a photographer.
I was a guest.
