There are moments in wildlife photography that happen so fast you barely have time to think—and then there are the ones you wait for, heart pounding, camera ready, hoping the ocean will give you a gift.
I was out on the water off the coast of Maui during humpback whale season, scanning the horizon between swells, when everything suddenly changed. A shadow beneath the surface. A shift in movement. And then—without warning—this young humpback rose from the blue.
For a brief second, time seemed to stop.
Water exploded around her as she lifted above the surface, framed against Maui’s rugged coastline. The sound of the breach echoed across the water while spray caught the sunlight like scattered diamonds. I pressed the shutter instinctively, knowing moments like this are impossible to predict and impossible to repeat.
Every winter, humpback whales migrate thousands of miles to the warm protected waters of Hawaiʻi to breed, give birth, and teach their calves the rhythms of the ocean. To witness even a glimpse of that journey feels like a privilege.
This is why I return to Maui—because sometimes the wild rewards patience with a moment you’ll never forget.
