They call this stretch of coastline S Turns on Maui’s west side—a place where surfers gather to wait for the perfect wave as the island slowly slips into evening light. On this night, the ocean felt calm, almost reflective, as the last colors of sunset spread across the sky in soft shades of gold, lavender, and pale blue.
From the shoreline, I watched surfers floating quietly beyond the break, silhouetted against the fading horizon. There’s a rhythm here that feels timeless: waves rolling in, boards rising and falling with the swell, the distant outline of Lanai resting beneath the setting sun. Maui has a way of slowing everything down, reminding you to simply sit still and watch the world unfold.
What drew me to this scene wasn’t dramatic surf or crashing waves, but the peaceful balance between ocean, sky, and light. The glowing clouds above S Turns seemed to mirror the calm energy of the water below. Moments like this are why I’m endlessly inspired by Hawaii—not just for its beauty, but for the feeling it leaves behind long after the sun disappears.
As a photographer, I’m always searching for that connection between landscape and emotion. This evening at S Turns wasn’t about action; it was about serenity, reflection, and the quiet magic that happens at the edge of the Pacific as day gives way to night.
