The Stanley Hotel stands proudly against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, its white façade gleaming in the Colorado sunlight. At first glance, it feels welcoming, elegant, and timeless. Yet beneath its grand appearance lies a reputation that has drawn curious travelers, paranormal investigators, and horror fans for more than a century.
I arrived in Estes Park expecting to photograph a historic landmark. Instead, I found myself immersed in one of America's most famous ghost stories.
Built in 1909, the Stanley Hotel is best known for inspiring Stephen King's The Shining. As I walked through its hallways and explored its storied rooms, it was easy to understand why. The atmosphere seemed to shift as daylight faded. Long corridors stretched into silence, historic photographs watched from the walls, and every creak of the old building seemed to carry a story from another era.
Guests and staff have long shared tales of unexplained footsteps, phantom piano music drifting through empty rooms, and mysterious encounters with former residents who may never have truly checked out. Whether one believes the stories or not, there is an undeniable energy here—a feeling that the hotel remembers every guest who has passed through its doors.
Standing outside with my camera, I was struck by the contrast between the hotel's beauty and its reputation. The bright afternoon sky illuminated a building associated with darkness, mystery, and imagination. It was this contradiction that drew me to make this photograph. The Stanley is not simply a haunted hotel; it is a place where history, storytelling, and legend have become inseparable.
As evening approached and the mountains cast longer shadows across the grounds, the hotel seemed to transform. The same building that appeared welcoming in daylight began to take on a more mysterious character. For a photographer, it was a reminder that places often reveal different personalities depending on the hour—and perhaps, depending on who is looking.
