There are restaurants, and then there are institutions. Along the shores of Sandy Hook Bay, Bahrs Landing has been welcoming fishermen, boaters, travelers, and families for more than a century.
I photographed this Jersey Shore landmark on a quiet afternoon when the parking lot sat empty and the bay shimmered beyond the building. Without the crowds, the scene felt timeless. The familiar red lobster sign stood proudly against the sky, a beacon for generations who have made the journey to Highlands in search of fresh seafood and waterfront views.
Founded in 1917, Bahrs began as a simple fishing and clamming operation before growing into one of New Jersey's most beloved seafood destinations. For decades, commercial fishermen unloaded their daily catches nearby while ferries carried passengers across the bay. The restaurant became a gathering place where stories were exchanged over plates of lobster, chowder, and freshly caught fish.
What makes Bahrs special is not just its food but its connection to the maritime history of the Jersey Shore. Sitting at the gateway to Sandy Hook, it has witnessed hurricanes, nor'easters, booming summers, and changing generations. Through it all, it has remained a constant presence on the waterfront.
Standing there with my camera, I was reminded of countless family outings to the Shore. Places like Bahrs are woven into the memories of New Jersey residents—summer weekends, fishing trips, celebrations, and the simple pleasure of watching boats move across the bay.
This photograph captures more than a restaurant. It captures a piece of living Jersey Shore history, a landmark that continues to connect visitors with the maritime traditions and coastal culture that define this corner of New Jersey.
