There is something special about a September moonrise along the Jersey Shore. As summer begins to fade and the crowds grow thinner, the coastline takes on a quieter rhythm. On this evening in Asbury Park, the Atlantic Ocean seemed to pause in anticipation as the full moon slowly emerged above the horizon.
I arrived before sunset and watched as the colors of the sky softened into layers of blue, lavender, peach, and gold. The beach, usually alive with activity during the height of summer, grew still. Small waves rolled gently onto the sand, their rhythm becoming the soundtrack to the evening.
Then it appeared.
The full moon rose from the Atlantic like a glowing lantern, suspended between sea and sky. For a few moments, it seemed impossibly large. Its golden light stretched across the water, creating a shimmering path that connected the horizon to the shoreline. Around me, beachgoers stopped their conversations and turned toward the ocean. Strangers stood together in quiet appreciation of a moment that no photograph can fully capture.
September's full moon, often called the Harvest Moon, has guided travelers, fishermen, and farmers for generations. Along the Jersey Shore, it remains one of nature's most beautiful spectacles. The moonrise lasts only minutes, yet the memory lingers long after darkness settles over the coast.
What drew me to make this image was not simply the moon itself, but the feeling of calm that accompanied it. The ocean, the fading colors of twilight, and the steady rise of the moon created a scene that felt timeless. It was a reminder that even in a world filled with distractions, nature still has the power to stop us in our tracks.
This photograph captures one of those fleeting moments when the Atlantic Ocean, the evening sky, and a September full moon came together in perfect harmony.
